Why recycle?

Recycling and Litter Prevention Knox County OhioRecycling is an important way for individuals and businesses to reduce the waste they generate and reduce the negative impact of that waste. Because recycling is big business in Ohio, every time you recycle, it also supports the many companies and employees doing this important work.

Recycling conserves our natural resources, saves landfill space, conserves energy, and reduces water pollution, air pollution and the green house gas emissions that cause global warming.

Together, Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and buying Recycled products make up a comprehensive waste and resource reduction strategy that benefits our natural world and our economy.

Fun Facts

It generally takes less energy to make products with recycled materials than virgin materials, often significantly less. For example, it takes 20 times more energy to make aluminum from bauxite ore than using recycled aluminum. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a computer for 3 hours!

Every tree provides oxygen enough for 3 people to breathe.

Recycling one ton of paper saves 682.5 gallons of oil, 7,000 gallons of water, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.

Each year 50 billion plastic water bottles are consumed, but only 23 percent were recycled. This leaves 38 billion water bottles to be thrown away in a landfill. Use a reusable, BPA-free water bottle and save money and natural resources.

Reduce lunch waste by buying snacks in large bags and putting them into small, reusable containers. The small bags cost up to 30 percent more and create 10 times as much garbage. Use a reusable lunch bag as well.

Recycling steel saves 75 percent of the energy that would be used to create steel from raw materials — enough to power 18 million homes.
