What is Public Health and Why Should it Matter to You?

"Community" in letter banner

It’s Public Health Week and while we love that we get to celebrate this week, we know that public health should be celebrated every week! Without public health, many people would not get the access to the care and help they need.

We love the message from the American Public Health Association for this celebratory week, “Public Health is Where You Are.” Here at the Knox County Community Health Center, we know this is true. With three offices in Mount Vernon and two in Danville we are where we need to be most and our involvement within these communities makes a positive difference.

Why Public Health?

The goal of public health is to treat you where you live and where you are in your health journey, both physically and mentally. It is our job to protect the health of those that live in our communities and promote what we can do to help everyone stay healthy and happy! Where you live, work, play and learn should give you access to medical, mental, and preventive health care - you have a right to receive all of these services locally. Accessibility and providing quality care are of top importance to those of us involved with public health.

What does the Knox Community Health Center offer you?

Our job is to not only help you when you are sick, but also to help you stay healthy from the beginning. Preventative care is a big part of what we do—focusing on your health, finding health concerns before they become a big issue, offering support, and helping you find a balanced lifestyle.

While our qualified doctors, nurses, and medical professionals are here to help you when you are sick, we offer you so much more, as well.

Check it out!:

  • Treatment of illnesses such as ear aches, colds, sore throats, sinus infections
  • Management of chronic disease such as diabetes
  • Physical exams for work, school, and sports
  • Well-child exams
  • Immunizations for children and adults including shots for influenza, pneumonia, hepatitis A and B, and shingles
  • Women’s health including pregnancy tests and pap tests
  • Blood pressure screenings, TB testing, tetanus shots, STD testing
  • Dental care for all ages
  • Counseling services and treatment
  • Tobacco cessation treatment
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Substance use treatment
  • COVID testing and vaccines
  • And so, so much more! (P.S. - Did we mention that we provide FREE round trip transportation for all appointments?!)

We also have many programs to help you since we have a special partnership with Knox Public Health — whether you would like CPR training, quitting smoking information, to be involved in traffic safety initiatives, or could benefit from a newborn home visit with a public health nurse, our in-house services and connections are all designed to help achieve optimum health for the whole family.

Your health is important to us. Our mission statement, "Healthcare For Everyone” is just that, our mission. We will work with you to create a payment plan that fits your current financial situation. We accept everyone, whether you are uninsured or insured. Plus, our sliding scale is offered to everyone who is eligible.

No matter your situation, your health, or your needs, our team is here to keep you healthy.
